Peppermint Patty has her first litter
After the problem we had with losing most of Chocolate’s first litter due to the cold, we put a heat lamp in with Peppermint Patty 6 weeks ago. We’d hoped she’d have her babies last month, but that didn’t happen. We knew it would be sometime this week, so 2 days ago we also gave her some extra hay to make a nest.
Keith went out first and came back in the house to tell us the good news. She had 7 living piglets, and 2 dead, one still in the sack. It may have already been dead before birth. We don’t know for certain. But 7 are alive and doing well! They were shivering and not near enough to the heat lamp, so he moved them and encircled them with some hay to keep in some warmth. As they realized there was heat there, they all kept shifting and pushing into the middle where it was the warmest. It was quite humorous. After 15 minutes they weren’t shivering so much and we’ve seen Peppermint nursing, so we think they’ll do very well.
